PICTURES LEARN TO WALK WHEN YOU CARRY THEM AROUND
A flip book show performed by Volker Gerling [Germany]

Volker Gerling, the German photographer and flip-book cinematographer, travels throughout Germany and takes pictures of people that he meets. He bundles the photos in flip books and takes to the road again to show them around. He is a born storyteller who has a story or an anecdote for every funny and surprising image. His protagonists are people that one can meet anytime. But each and every one of them is extraordinary and has a story to tell: there is an old do-gooder who almost starved himself to death, a journeyman who fell in love just as he was about to set off for another trip, or a young woman who decided to change her life after a very special vacation.

He holds the picture book, flips through its pages with the thumb in front of a video camera, projects images onto a screen, and the result is pure magic. In Berlin, Gerling’s hometown, these subtle and profound reflections upon fleeting moments and significance of personal encounters have achieved legendary status.

Volker Gerling has presented his widely acclaimed shows since 1998 - also at other international theatre festivals in Europe.
